Day 4: Embracing Our Palestinian Identity and Culture

Day 4 was an incredible journey as we delved deeper into our Palestinian identity and explored the rich tapestry of our culture. The day began with a soul-stirring reflection session on Palestinian identity. Gathered in a circle, we discussed our personal understandings, perceptions, and reflections, on what the Palestinian identity means. Following the morning reflection, we were honored to have the talented Chef Hiba Jitan join us for a captivating cooking session. Before we started, we engaged in a meaningful discussion about Palestinian cuisine and its cultural significance. We also discussed the issue of cultural appropriation, emphasizing the need to protect and respect our rich culinary heritage.

Excitement filled the air as we split into three groups to embark on our kitchen adventure. The school's cafeteria buzzed with action and camaraderie as each group delved into their assigned dishes. One group mastered the art of making sfeeha and mini Zaatar manakeesh, while another crafted a refreshing and colorful fattoush salad. The final group worked diligently on preparing the traditional Ouzi, a dish that Hiba mentioned is made on a weekly basis in Palestine but has Turkish origins. As campers cooked, the cafeteria echoed with the melodies of traditional Palestinian music. Once the dishes were complete, we gathered around the set tables to enjoy our scrumptious creations together. The flavors of our Palestinian cuisine united us in a shared celebration of our cultural heritage. This communal meal embodied the spirit of unity and togetherness that defines our journey at Go Palestine Summer Camp.

After our satisfying feast, we settled in the library for an eye-opening film screening of "Roadmap to Apartheid." This poignant documentary drew parallels between apartheid in South Africa and the current situation in Palestine. The film provided us with valuable insights and sparked thought-provoking discussions about the power of learning from history and seeking a path to peace and justice.

To round off the day, we gathered at the Ramallah Cultural Palace for an unforgettable performance by the Al Funoon Dance Troupe during the Palestine International Festival. The stage came alive with the captivating moves of Palestinian dabkeh, a dance that has been passed down through generations. Our very own camper, Yasmin Helou, dazzled us all with her remarkable skills, leaving us cheering with pride and admiration.
