Camp Day 12: Akka and Haifa Revisited

Our plans to visit Nablus were unfortunately set aside for the duration of the camp due to the prevailing security concerns. Nevertheless, we redirected our energy and enthusiasm towards the historical cities of Akka and Haifa. Campers basked in the sunlit streets of Akka's old city, delving into its captivating history, before finding solace by its serene beaches. Transitioning to Haifa, we were enveloped in a city that symbolizes both resilience and transformation. Through our journey in the old city, stopping by monuments, churches, and mosques, we were introduced to a haunting tale of erasure. The guide unveiled the systematic obliteration of Haifa's Palestinian identity by the Israelis, revealing the destruction or masking of iconic landmarks. Yet, amidst this narrative of loss, the determination of Haifa's remaining Palestinian community stood out. Their dedication to preserving the city's true essence, against overwhelming adversities, was a living testament to endurance and the unyielding Palestinian spirit of sumood.
